There have been a bunch of posts on the official Sony forums recently about returning to Everquest.  I will attempt to keep an up to date F.A.Q. here to help those are thinking about coming back.

Q1: What’s the latest all-in-one pack I can buy to get caught up with all the expansions?

A: Seeds of Destruction.  You can purchase this ONLY online through the station store or on the server select screen.  There is a new expansion coming out in November, Underfoot.

Q2 – What level can you start using Mercs?

A: Level One.  You just need to own Seeds of Destruction.  Mercs are free until you hit level 10 at which point you pay a small fee every 15 minutes you have them active.

Q3 – Given my long absence and all the changes in the game since I quit… would you recommend I start over with a new char?  Or try and remember how to play my old ones?

A: You have three options (I believe):

  1. Goto the new 51/50AA server.  You start at level 51 with 50 AAs.  I hear they have a solid population.
  2. Goto the Stormm Server (I hear a lot of people say they have a good population of new players).
  3. Start a new character on your original server or another normal server.

If you decide to start fresh on a normal server give Bristlebane a shot.  My guild, Meiyo, is more than willing to help you get started again.

Q4: What has changed since I have been gone?

A: Short answer…everything.

Long answer:

  1. Experience is a lot easier to copy by.  Getting to level 70 won’t take you more than a month even if you are a casual player.
  2. Everyone gets an experience boost on AAs till you have 1,000.  This will help you catch up faster
  3. Your old gear probably is worthless.  SOE introduced defiant gear which is a common drop off of any mob and easily bought in the bazaar.  These items will help you get going again.

Q5: Where Should I Experience?

A: Anywhere you like, but if you are looking for guidance…I would suggest the zones found in this post.  SOE introduced hot zones to provide players with a place to go to gain bonus experience.  Because of the bonus experience you will also notice those zones make it easier to find groups.

So a month ago our Time Warner Cable promotional period ended and our bill went from $109 to $140 for just cable TV (with HBO) and 6Mbit Internet.  This has happened before and we simply call to get on another promotional rate.  Although, this time they did not have a promotional rate…they initally offered to lower our bill by $1.25 if we signed a one year contract.  Obviously, we did not bite on that.  They managed to take $5 off our bill with no string attached.  I still was not satisfied and informed the agent that they would be losing a customer soon.

I then set out to price out all of the other options for Northeast Ohio – Dish Network, Directv, and ATT.  Dish has a really cool TV service called TurboHD which only gives you HD channels and only the ones you want.  Sadly though, they were missing a couple channels that were deal breakers for us.  Directv had all the right channels plus NFL Sunday ticket, but sadly they wanted a ton of money upfront for our cable boxes.  Even without paying monthly for the cable boxes I found that Directv would be in the same range as Time Warner in terms of price.  That left us with ATT.

ATT has a TV/Internet/Phone bundle under their uverse program.  The idea behind uverse is that your phone, TV, and Internet signals are all sent over your phone lines.  We priced out with them at $160.00 a month for everything (including phone, which we had been paying $62.00/month on top of our Time Warner bill).  This was a huge savings.  They promised us a high speed internet connection, and 4 TV streams.  They made it sound as though we would be getting 4 HD streams, but more on that later.  We setup our install appointment for Monday.

Monday:

8 AM: ATT Installer Arrives

The first thing he tells me is that we only get one HD stream with uverse.  This was not explained at all during our sales call.  I admit, I should have researched this before signing up.  In all honestly though it didn’t cross my mind since with Time Warner you can get a ton of HD streams – I never thought twice about it.  Having 4 HD TVs in the house, 1 HD stream is a little tight.

He runs some simple tests outside and finds that our lines need some work done to them.  He puts in a request for a repair technician to come out and fix the lines. Why they don’t train one person to do everything…I don’t know.

10AM: Repair Guy Arrives

The repair guy comes out “fixes” the issue.  We said we were running at 85% bandwidth, but he lowered it to 50% bandwidth.  He then told me the install guy should be out shortly.

12PM: Installer Returns

The install guy comes back out and I help him make all the connections throughout the house to get things working.  We had to disconnect our Time Warner since ATT -uverse can use the same lines to send the TV signal out to the TVs.

3PM: Finish Install

It took us a few hours to finish the install, but we eventually got everything up and running.  The technician told me to call ATT and request a 2nd HD stream…they typically give you one if you have a good enough signal.  He leaves.  I pick up the phone to call and immediately hear tons of static.  Not a good start to our service.  After about 30 minutes getting transfered around I get someone on the line who says they can not give us a 2nd HD stream without a technician’s ticket saying it is ok.  Our tech just left….

I made an appointment for Thursday for someone to come out and see about the static on the line and the 2nd HD stream.

6PM: First Outage

At this point I have blown an entire vacation day working with ATT.  Not really what everyone has in mind when they think “vacation”.  Right as I sat down at my computer the Internet goes out.  I walk down stairs to find the service light went out.  I am fairly familiar with losing service (I did have TWC…) so I just unplugged the router and plugged it back in.  My service came back and the world was happy.

Tuesday:

Everything was working well all day long, until….

4PM: 2nd Outage

The TV, Internet, and phone all lost service.  We called ATT and they went through a bunch of tests with us – reseting the router, changing the connection types, testing the port on their server, etc.  They determined a technician had to come out to take a look at the issue.  I told them about our Thursday appointment and they bumped us up to Wednesday evening.

Wednesday:

Still no service.  Luckily (kind of), my vacation was over and we had Internet at work.

7:30PM: Technication Arrives

I explain to him what has been going on and what the current theories are.  He takes the router outside and hooks it directly up to the lines from ATT (to verify it isn’t an internal wiring problem).  He comes back and explains that the repair person who came out on Monday didn’t actually fix the lines, he just put a bandage on it by “reducing the profile”.  I don’t know exactly what that means, but at this point I was just happy to hear someone with a solid theory.  He calls him boss and sets up an appointment for someone to come out Thursday morning.

8:30PM: Technication Leaves

We still don’t have Internet, TV, or phone…great.

Thursday:

As I woke up at 7:48 I realized we didn’t get the ATT people our cell phone numbers (since our phone isn’t working).  We call ATT to have them put this on our ticket.  After being transfered literally seven times we get no where.  We call the cell number of the technication that was at our house the previous night…on his day off.  Of course we woke him up, but I really appreciated him even answering his phone.  He gets a hold of his boss and gets us an appointment for the afternoon – he explains that the request went in to late the previous night and no one “accepted it”.

11AM: Repair Man Arrives

The line repair guy spent the majority of the afternoon (until 2:30) working on the lines outside.  He was confident that he fixed everything, but we didn’t have time to check.  We had a meeting setup at 3PM.

5PM: Arrive Home

We arrived home at 5PM to find that our services were not fixed.  We called ATT and they send someone out to take a look at things.

7PM: Technication Arrives

The tech finds that the guy in the afternoon left a couple lines loose.  He tightened them up and our service came back online.

11PM: Service Outage

Our service drops again.  I go outside to switch things back to TWC.  When I go into the computer room I see that ATT has service again.  My dad and I begin to disconnect and reconnect cables one by one to see if we can narrow down what is causing the problem.  We find that disconnecting the TV line to my room makes everything work.  I suspect that there is voltage building up in the line somewhere – it would explain why I could feel something odd on the line.

Monday: Technician Arrives

Our final techinication came out and took a look at our setup and found that there was noise in our power signal.  Apparently the ground wire was not set properly and the gateway is highly sensative to this.  This theory also explains the voltage I was feeling over the line.  We ran a new cable to another room and hooked everything up.  Everything began to work.

Two Weeks Later:

Since then we have had only minor outages, but nothing more than a few minutes at a time.  After all the dust has settled here are my thoughts:

We has 2 HD streams and 2 standard streams.  I have noticed that the picture quality on both the standard and HD streams is higher than with TWC.  ATT uses MPEG-4 compression for the video, which gives a solid picture.  We have 4 TVs in our home (all HD).  It will be interesting to see how our DVR setup will work in the fall.  Each of us like different shows, some of them might have to be recorded in standard instead of HD.  This isn’t a big deal for the comedies/sit-coms, but hopefully the times work out so Idol,24, and other high motion shows can all be recorded in HD.

The single DVR is great for watching recording anywhere in the home.  This will prove to be a lot more useful when the fall approaches.

The Internet (Elite 6 MB) has been working fine as well.  I couldn’t tell the difference between it and TWC while playing games or downloading large files.

We did switch our phone service back to the landline…something about having our phone connected to our Iternet made us confortable.  Having the Internet drop about 10x in the past week confirmed these concerns.  ATT agreed to give us the landline at the same price…you just have to ask nicely.

Let me know if you have any questions!

*** Highlights ***

- EQ’s 10th Anniversary celebrations continues. All the raid events will remain until May 25th. Lower Guk and Unrest group encounters kicked off on the 11th and end on the 25th as well. Enjoy the rest of the celebrations!

*** Items ***

- Added a missing heal focus to the Protective Gorget of the Deep.
- Added Improved Parry/Block to several neck items that were missing it.
- Applied new icons to the Beastlord epic 1.0 (Claws of the Savage Spirit).
- Changed the displayed solvent on many destroyable augments to make it clear that they can be dissolved by the Augmentation Solvent.
- Irae Faycite Shard: Ethereal Enhancement, Irae Faycite Shard: Klixcxyk’s and Icesheet Casc., Irae Faycite Shard: Ethereal Burn and Irae Faycite Shard: Inizen’s and Glacial Collapse should now properly focus the intended spells. A change has been made to all similar foci that should prevent a similar problem in the future.

*** Spells ***

- Triggered PC spells with large dummy values in cast time have had that time reduced or removed.

*** AAs ***

- The Berserker AAs Blur of Axes and Precision of Axes have been increased in power.
- The Shadow Knight AA “Cascading Theft of Life” has been renamed “Cascading Theft of Defense” to better fit its function.
- Harmonious arrow now correctly assigns hate to its user.

*** Raids ***

- Added Fractured Coeval Luminessence and Fractured Coeval Incandessence as a chance to drop from the chest that the mini bosses in discord tower drop. This also reduces the chance for stat and weapon augments from this chest.

*** Tradeskills ***

- The first set of changes to poison have been made. Strike of Ssraeshza poisons have a 10 second recast on them. Bite of the Shissar, Strike of the Shissar, Solusek’s Burn and E’ci’s Lament Poison remove about half the hate they give on each strike. Quellious’ Trauma removes about half the hate it did before. Quellious’ Trauma, Myrmidon’s Sloth, Messenger’s Bane, Fighter’s Bane, Warlord’s Bane, Archer’s Bane and Monk’s Bane have had their “proc count” increased so they last longer.
- Messenger’s Bane poisons will properly snare their target rather than giving them a speed boost.
- The recipe for Thundering Blades Rk. II has been disabled. It should not yet be able to be created.

*** Pets ***

- Fixed some typos in the pet help window.
- Fixed some problems with hot-keyed commands not displaying their state correctly.
- A new “regroup” command has been added. This command is very similar to “stop” except when using “regroup” the pet will not only stop attacking, but will revert to either follow or guard depending on what is selected. This essentially mimics the old “hold” behavior. “Regroup” and “stop” are mutually exclusive. If you use “regroup” both sit and stop should turn off. If you use “stop” then “regroup” should turn off.

*** Miscellaneous ***

- Campfire summoning has been turned on for the following zones (note that all usual restrictions apply): Crystallos, Mansion, Qinimi, and Tipt.
- Guild Banner summoning has been turned on for the following zones (note that all usual restrictions apply): Uqua, Tacvi, Qinimi, Tipt, Anguish, Demiplane of Blood, Deathknell – Tower of Dissonance, Crystallos (both normal and raid), Mansion (both normal and raid), Discord Raid and Discord Tower Raid.
- Fixed a problem that was causing voice chat volume sliders to get stuck on the screen.
- Revamped the way guild information is stored on the server to get around limitations on the maximum number of guilds. Some servers were hitting the max.
- Fixed a problem with raid dumps that were made when the raid window was not visible.
- The voice chat bar is now visible on login if your voice chat is active.
- Fixed a problem with bard focuses that caused Singing and Instrument mastery to not work if the song was otherwise not focused by any item or effect.
- Fixed a problem with guild creation that was causing it to fail when you tried to create a guild with a name whose beginning was a subset of an existing guild (e.g. creating “Killer” when “Killers in the Mist” already existed).
- Fixed an issue with displayed ordering of marketplace items.

A couple months ago I became very bored with Everquest II – my desire was like a light bulb that just burned out. I found myself bored of all the questing to level up. Honestly, it reminded me a lot of how WoW does it…go kill 10 of creature x and come back. Then go kill another 10…it drained me.

I occupied my free time with some Starcraft – I became half-way decent. I was really enjoying my time away from MMOs; I think the break was exactly what I needed.

Eventually the MMO bug got me again. To change things up, this time I decide to reactivate EQ1…there is just something about that game that keeps bringing me back in. I think it is some combination of it being my first MMO, the hardest one I have played, and good game play. Despite how much I like EQ, Rawrzor didn’t feel quite the same way. It took some convincing for him to reactivate – I had to level a Druid to 70 for him. All of the EQjunkies kick in and we got him a 70 Druid, Lulz, in a week’s time.

We spent a month or so exploring SoF and some of the other zones we missed while we were gone. I then started to do the SoD progression stuff, which is coming a long…but taking some time.

I also got the linux bug again…I installed Ubuntu 9.04 and began to play EQ in Linux (using wine). It was really easy to setup, the wine HQ page for EQ gave me all the info I needed. I also moved away from Ventrilo and started to use mumble because it works across all platforms…something that Ventrilo can’t claim. The sound quality is good and also the push to talk actually works in linux. The only disadvantage linux has to windows is that 4 boxing on an old P4 isn’t as smooth in Linux, but that should be expected…EQ wasn’t developed for Linux.

This morning I finally got EQ2 working in Ubuntu under both wine and crossover games.  I haven’t had a chance to see if the voice chat works correctly since none of the other junkies were online.

I will post a comprehensive guide once I get the voice chat working!

I just wanted to remind everyone that we do have forums at EQjunkies – we just rarely use them.

Feel free to stop by the forums and see what is going on.
